Background to the essence
I was on a boat trip out to see the seal colonies at Blakeney in Norfolk. Common and grey seals lay on the sandbanks and heads bobbed in the sea, viewing with easy curiosity, unbothered and content. They bend almost double to stretch and turn as they lie on shore, and swim with effortless flow. They teach ease. This was my first of a series of essences to capture the spirit and energy of an animal.

35. SUNDIAL (SEAL)

I look sunwise and squint at you
As you do a turn around me
Looking in wonder at my ease.
My eyes follow you like a sundial
Turning imperceptibly.
So when you look away
And look back,
I haven’t moved.

I know your every move though and more
You see I am very wise here
I know you look and think I’m not.
What would a seal need with the knowledge
Of how the sundial works, heh?
So you just turn away
But come back.
I haven’t moved.

I teach you by my silence don’t I?
Your fascination shows me that
Although you pretend that you aren’t.
You see the sundial is a light sign
For where you stand in all of time.
So now you understand
But glance back.
And now I’ve moved.
