Become a tried and tested part of the whole, to be relied upon. The wolf leader goes ahead and shows the way forward.
Background to the essence
This essence honours two she-wolves, Duma and Dakota, North American full-sisters born in 1998, living at the UK Wolf Centre in Berkshire. I walked with them in woods nearby and was able to experience some of their life and ways. The essence is about belonging. It is about belonging to the wolf family – a close-knit unit where each member plays a part and is a tried and tested part of the whole. The wolf identifies and tests the weakest point in someone and so makes them strong and to be relied on. The wolf is tireless and senses all. The she-wolf leader is the one who goes off ahead into the blizzard and returns to show the way forward. In native American thinking Wolf "medicine" is powerful healing.
When it is not external it is internal
The war.
There is something habitual and purposive
To clear.
It is between two people who match
And spar.
Stancing around each other in an eternal
Stand off.
Why is it eternal?
It seems there is a circle which they tread
No end.
Each time one moves around perimeter-wise
Things start.
The other has to go to battle drawn station
And fight.
And so it goes till they stop again in rest
Quiet keeps.
Why is it proceeding?
It started so far off it really is grooved
Deep grain.
Neither knows the other’s role or what they are
In truth.
And maybe it’s irrelevant for what transpires
Between.
For all that they exist in each other’s knowing
Is foe.
Why is it still going?
Locking horns takes time to part and stand back
To think.
Coming back to sense needs grooves to fill and smooth
Truce wait.
Something has to happen to seal the pact of ending
Unties.
Maybe it is all too long in the doing
To start.
Why is it not ready?
Opening in each of two worlds’ windows
Gives chance.
Light of understanding flows unhindered
No pain.
Lining up the portals not been charted
Before.
Each side understanding pointless fighting
No more.
Why it took so long?
No answer.
